Bernardsville has long been a place of refuge for the "rich and famous" who wanted a proximity to New York City and privacy on their off-time. Just an hour west of Manhattan by car or train, this quiet, upscale community boasts some of the finest homes and estates in New Jersey, and has been home to celebrities, industrialists and high-ranking government officials. What they mostly have in common is or was the desire to enjoy the scenic landscape, peaceful ambiance and discretion of their neighbors. Bernardsville borders on the other Somerset Hills towns of Mendham, Peapack, Far Hills, Basking Ridge and New Vernon. It is a primary shopping district for these towns and is host to some of the finest dining establishments in New Jersey. Downtown Bernardsville has retained much of its historic charm, but has also extended north to accommodate the needs of its residents. From the downtown to the prestigious "mountain colony", Bernardsville is just 12.9 Sq. Miles in total area.
